DACTYLIC HEXAMETER

The hexameter line is the metrical form used in both Greek and Latin epic poems, but also in other long and medium-length forms such as didactic and pastoral. Occasionally, epigrams or other short pieces are found in hexameters: usually this suggests some association between the subject or tone of the poem and the typical themes and subjects of hexameter verse (such as glory, heroism or religious or mythological themes). The hexameter line is also used as the first line in each elegiac couplet (see below). The word ‘dactylic’ refers to the basic pattern of a long followed by two shorts (– also called a dactyl).
